Wine producer Vergelegen wine estate, in Somerset West, has partnered with collaborative venture SkyBugs to test the use of drone-delivered beneficial insects to control pests in its vineyards. SkyBugs, a partnership between integrated pest management provider FieldBUGS and agritech company Aerobotics, employs a network of skilled drone pilots to accurately disperse the insects.

Five small timber growers in KwaZulu-Natal in December became the first participants to achieve forest certification through the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) Sappi Group Scheme for small growers. The growers were part of Sappi’s Khulisa programme.

Power utility Eskom has confirmed that it will implement electricity price increases, as approved by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa), from April 1. The utility in October 2023 applied to Nersa for the approval of its Retail Tariff and Structural Adjustment Application and the schedule of tariffs for the period from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025.
Hummingbird warns of delay in achieving commercial production at Kouroussa

Aim-listed Hummingbird Resources has informed shareholders that commercial production at its Kouroussa gold mine, in Guinea, will be delayed beyond the targeted first quarter of this year owing to reduced mining activity. In the meantime, the supporting mining contractor continues to operate, with the processing plant processing this ore, together with stockpiled material.

The government has made progress on its Medium-Term Strategic Framework targets and, as it wraps up this administration, believes these numbers will continue to increase, Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi said at the 2023/24 yearly media briefing on March 28. She noted that the department had been able to achieve the following against its targets: 75.8% of Breaking New Ground (BNG) houses built against its target; 75.4% of serviced sites against its target; 92.6% of its target to rezone its acquired land; 47.2% of communal residential units; 73.8% of rental units in priority developmental areas delivered; and 104.3% of integrated projects achieved.
Bell posts 66% rise in full-year profit

JSE-listed heavy machinery manufacturer Bell Equipment has posted a 66% increase in profit for the year ended December 31, 2023, to R793-million. Following unprecedented global demand for equipment in most markets, the company generated basic earnings per share (EPS) of 799c, which is a 67% increase on the prior year’s EPS of 47c.
Astronomers find 49 new gas-rich galaxies in 3 hours using MeerKAT radio telescope

A team of international astronomers have discovered 49 new gas-rich galaxies using the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa from observations under three hours long. The research was aimed at studying the star-forming gas in a single radio galaxy and was led by International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) Curtin University node researcher Dr Marcin Glowacki.
15 climate projects selected for Phase 3 of Climate Finance Accelerator South Africa

Fifteen climate projects from across the country have been selected to take part in the third phase of the UK-funded low-carbon projects initiative Climate Finance Accelerator (CFA) South Africa. From 173 applications, the chosen projects come from the energy, transportation, agriculture, forestry and other land uses, circular economy and water sectors.

Stellenbosch University PhD graduate Dr Steve Chingwaru has uncovered what is potentially the world’s largest invisible gold resource. The geometallurgist’s findings could help unlock gold to the value of R450-billion “hiding in plain sight” in mine dumps around Johannesburg.
