Decarbonising the steel industry will require an increase in high-grade iron-ore production and improved beneficiation techniques, finds a new report from research institution Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA). The report, titled ‘Iron-Ore Quality a Potential Headwind to Green Steelmaking’, is co-authored by energy finance analyst Simon Nicholas and steel sector energy finance analyst Soroush Basirat.

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the global market for iron-ore, estimated at 2.2-billion metric tonnes in the year 2022, was projected to reach a revised size of 2.5-billion metric tonnes by 2026, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 3.2% over the analysis, stated a report by market research company Global Industry Analysts titled 'Iron-ore - Global Market Trajectory & Analytics’. The report, published in May this year, stated that the steel industry had experienced faster-than-expected recovery from the impact of lockdowns and production disruptions amid the Covid-19 outbreak. The report attributed the rebound  to the strong contribution from major end-use sectors like construction and automotive.

Motors and drives original-equipment manufacturer (OEM) SEW-EURODRIVE notes the completion of the new multimillion local assembly facility in Johannesburg has resulted in lead time advantages.  The OEM is currently delivering on a R200-million investment in the expanded South African facility, which will enable SEW-EURODRIVE South Africa to look after another 24 facilities in different African countries.
Third-party appeal against Walviskop mineral sands project dismissed

South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has dismissed a third party's appeal against the granting of a mining permit for Aim-listed investment company Kazera Global’s 60%-owned subsidiary Whale Head Minerals (WHM).  WHM now expects to shortly receive final documentation allowing it to start heavy mineral sands (HMS) production at the Walviskop mine, in the Northern Cape.
Global coal consumption to match record as EU rushes to save gas

Global coal consumption this year is set to match a record set in 2013 as European economies work to conserve supplies of natural gas, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Demand for coal is rising even as countries target a reduction in carbon emissions over the coming years that will require curbing the use of the most polluting fossil fuel.
RBPlat warns of half-year earnings decline

Despite platinum group metals (PGMs) miner Royal Bafokeng Platinum’s (RBPlat’s) production for the six months ended June 30 having increased by 4.5% on the back of a strong performance at the Bafokeng Rasimone platinum mine, the miner says its basic earnings a share and headline earnings a share will decrease year-on-year. RBPlat is finalising its financial results for the six months and attributes the decline in earnings to a decrease in the PGM basket price and a decrease in the royalty income from Impala Platinum.
Sylvania dump operations increases output by 19% in the fourth quarter

Aim-listed platinum group metals (PGM) miner Sylvania Platinum’s dump operations achieved a 19% year-on-year increase in production to 18 837 oz for the fourth quarter ended June 30. This took full-year production to 67 053 oz.
MC Mining inks deal to piggyback off Overlooked’s export channel

Aim-, ASX- and JSE-listed coal explorer, developer and miner MC Mining has entered into a coal sales and marketing agreement with Mpumalanga-based coal miner Overlooked as an avenue to open an export channel of its API4 grade of coal. The marketing agreement, which expires on December 31, will facilitate the export of coal produced at MC Mining’s Uitkomst colliery, in KwaZulu-Natal, ensuring the mine benefits from the prevailing international coal prices.
