Amplats posts lower first-quarter output

Platinum group metals (PGM) miner Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) has reported a decrease in 5E metal-in-concentrate production of 7% to 834 100 oz for the quarter ended March 31, compared with the 901 200 oz produced in the same quarter of last year. Notably, the group’s own-managed PGM production decreased by 6% year-on-year to 504 300 oz, while the purchase of PGM concentrate decreased by 10% year-on-year to 329 000 oz.

Africa's mid- and downstream oil products supply infrastructure is ageing and suffers from a lack of investment, outdated policy frameworks and insufficiencies in regional, national and urban energy planning when compared with other regions across the world. Efforts have also not kept pace with rapidly growing populations and urbanisation trends, which has resulted in fragmented supply routes, bottlenecks and insufficient infrastructure capacity, contributing to an overreliance on trucks, congestion in cities and ports, and disrupted access to energy.

IEA expects another record year for EVs in 2024, but sales remain concentrated

The International Energy Agency (IEA) expects electric vehicle (EV) sales to rise to a record 17-million in 2024, representing more than one in every five passenger cars sold, but with sales likely to remain highly concentrated in the Chinese, European and US markets. Sales rose by 35% last year to a record level of nearly 14-million units, lifting the number of EVs on the road globally to 40-million, and with battery electric cars accounting for 70% of the electric car stock.

De Beers lowers full-year production guidance on high market inventory levels

Diamond miner De Beers, a subsidiary of diversified miner Anglo American, has lowered its production guidance for the 2024 full-year to between 26-million and 29-million carats in response to the higher-than-average levels of inventory in the market and expectations of only a gradual recovery in demand for rough diamonds. It had previously targeted production of 29-million to 32-million carats this year.

Zambia seeks power imports for key mining sector

Zambia's State-owned electricity utility Zesco said on Monday it is seeking to import power to avert an energy deficit that could affect output in Africa's second-largest copper producer. The southern African country generates 86% of its electricity from hydropower stations. Power generation has been hit by a severe drought induced by El Nino - a weather phenomenon resulting from the abnormal warming of the waters in the eastern Pacific, which raises temperatures globally.

Zijin's Congo mine shipments returned due to radiation levels, ministry says

Mineral shipments from a Congolese copper and cobalt operation majority-owned by China's Zijin Mining Group were returned due to overly high radiation levels, the Congolese mines minister said in a letter seen by Reuters on Monday. The letter, dated April 12, informed the COMMUS project in which Zijin owns a 72% stake that the ministry had suspended its licence while it investigated the issue.

Anglo helping to restore Amazon-like rainforest near Brazil iron-ore mine

Diversified mining company Anglo American is taking steps to help to restore an Amazon rainforest equivalent of which less than 10% remains intact. The Mata Atlántica carbon forest is located near Anglo’s Minas-Rio iron-ore mine, in Brazil.

Australian miner Northern Star Resources expects to “significantly increase” gold sales this quarter on higher production and better grades from its Kalgoorlie operations, including the Super Pit, as prices for the precious metal trade near record levels. Increasing ore supply is a key goal for Northern Star, the nation’s largest listed gold miner. While the Perth-based company didn’t provide a sales forecast for the June quarter in a production report released Tuesday, full-year guidance for 2024 remained unchanged at 1.6-million to 1.75-million ounces of gold sales.

Chinese nickel billionaire boosts Australian miner in Indonesia

In under a decade, Nickel Industries has gone from a relatively small miner to the world’s sixth-biggest producer of a metal used in products from batteries to stainless steel. Riding a Chinese-led boom in Indonesia’s nickel sector, it owns or has stakes in five plants in the country that churn out more of the commodity than household names like BHP Group.
