At last week’s Joburg Indaba, Cadiz Corporate Solutions mining policy consultant Peter Major described the conference’s session on the legacy issues left by the South African mining industry as the scariest of the two days. He said he found the gap between mining companies on the one hand and communities and labour unions on the other on these issues as enormous. The gap is enough to result in Investors running a mile. The momentum of the legacy issue is building up. He sees it as getting bigger by the year, dominating government policy, influencing negotiations with communities and unions and causing investors to steer clear of mining.
