Environmental and climate justice groups have called on Mineral Resources and Energy Gwede Mantashe and regulatory authority the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) to abandon plans to develop 1 500 MW of new coal-fired electricity. “The development of new coal-fired power is neither rational, nor lawful, given the well-documented environmental, social, human health and economic impacts of new coal-powered electricity generation in South Africa.
