The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) is calling for an inquest into the high rate of fatalities in the South African Mining Industry after mining house Sibanye-Stillwater recorded a fifth death at its Marikana platinum group metals (PGM) operations for 2021. The union on November 23 alleged that the miner was “cutting corners in safety protocols” and claimed that government was failing to ensure the implementation of necessary health and safety protocols.
