Globeleq acquires Brookfield’s South African renewables portfolio

Globeleq has entered into an agreement with an affiliate of Brookfield Asset Management to acquire Brookfield’s interest in its South African renewable energy portfolio.   The agreement is subject to various closing conditions and, once fulfilled, will give Globeleq a majority shareholding in six renewable projects totaling 178 MW, as well as ownership of Brookfield’s South African asset management company.

Lead partner in the Temane Energy Consortium (TEC), Globeleq, has signed a joint development agreement with Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) to progress the 400 MW Temane gas-fired power project, located in Mozambique’s Inhambane province. The agreement, which was signed at the African Energy Forum, taking place in Mauritius, this week, outlines that TEC will take 60% of EDM’s shareholding of the special purpose vehicle (SPV) company that holds the Temane project.

Renewables investors warn SA prices becoming ‘dangerously low’

The joint developers of the R3-billion Jeffreys Bay wind farm, situated alongside the N2 in Eastern Cape, have lauded South Africa’s transparent and well-run renewable-energy bidding programme and indicated on Wednesday that they would be participating in the upcoming fourth bid window. However, the global heads of both Mainstream Renewable Power and Globelec – whose companies have, to date, invested in 238 MW of wind and solar capacity – warned that the benefits of unfettered competitive bidding were limited and urged government to ensure the programme sustained an appropriate “balance” between risk and reward.
