Coal mining remains important

A prosperous future for the coal mining industry in South Africa depends on public and private sector parties tapping into its vast coal reserves, and power generation processes by State-owned power utility Eskom that comply with gas emission regulations, says nonprofit coal advocacy organisation FFF Carbon chairperson Professor Nicola Wagner. Repairing electricity-generating machinery efficiently must be prioritised to combat loadshedding, in addition to timely maintenance of generation plants to improve Eskom’s coal-fired power plant energy availability factor, Wagner adds.

A successful shaft sinking project entails the correct installation of various components timeously, in addition to experienced personnel working on the project from the outset and maximising the time spent at shaft bottom, says fastener supplier Swagefast sales manager Neil Koen. The company’s involvement in projects such as the K4 Shaft at diversified miner Ivanhoe Mines’ Platreef platinum group metals and nickel mine, in Limpopo, underscores the importance of specialised suppliers in ensuring the integrity and success of complex engineering projects, such as shaft sinking, he adds.

In preparation for building one of the world’s largest and highest-grade magnet metal rare earth mines later this year, London-listed Pensana has hosted key stakeholders on site at its Longonjo project, in Angola. CEO Tim George and project director Kevin Botha hosted the Angolan Sovereign Wealth Fund for a week-long visit to the site towards the end of March, as well as held meetings with key Angolan government agencies at local and national level.

Twelve scientists from Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries will head to Germany in May, where they will have an opportunity to obtain more in-depth insight into green hydrogen amid the region’s unveiling of important green hydrogen projects, pilot plant initiatives and the awarding of a large number of green hydrogen scholarships. Highlighting this week during the Sasscal-organised two-day Green Hydrogen Symposium in Namibia was Sasscal executive director Dr Jane Olwoch, who emphasised to Engineering News & Mining Weekly in a Zoom interview that “the countries of Southern Africa should first and foremost take note of the region’s advantages of participating in the green hydrogen economy.” (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.)
Freeport warns copper export ban could cost Indonesia $2bn in lost revenue

Copper miner Freeport Indonesia has warned the Indonesian government that banning exports of copper concentrate in June could lead to a loss of $2-billion in revenues for Jakarta, a company official said on Thursday. Indonesia's export ban takes effect from June in an effort to force miners to invest in domestic smelting facilities, thus adding value to their products, boosting earnings from exports.
