Kefi nears construction start at Tulu Kapi

London-listed Kefi Gold and Copper says the remaining finance syndicate approval process in respect of the Tulu Kapi project, in Ethiopia, is on track for final approvals this month. The company has started with launch preparations on site ahead of construction, which is earmarked to start by midyear.

Gold miner Caledonia Mining says its production and profit was supported by a favourable gold price in the first quarter of the year, which has continued through April and into May. The company’s Blanket and Bilboes mines, in Zimbabwe, recorded a 6% increase in production to 17 476 oz, compared with 16 141 oz produced in the same quarter of last year.
Clean Air Metals appoints new VP of exploration

Canadian exploration company Clean Air Metals has appointed Lionnel Djon as its new VP of exploration, succeeding Geoff Heggie who has left the company to pursue other opportunities. Djon has most recently led the exploration team at Impala Canada. Under his leadership, significant mineral resource increases have been made at the Lac des Iles mine through discoveries at depth and adjacent to the known deposit.
Horizon Minerals inks toll milling agreement

ASX-listed Horizon Minerals on Monday announced a toll milling agreement with FMR Investments to treat 200 000 t of ore from the Cannon underground deposit. FMR owns the Greenfields mill, which is about 67 km by road from the Cannon project in Western Australia.

ASX-listed developer Element 25 is speeding up efforts to expand its Butcherbird project, in Western Australia, seizing the opportunity presented by a resurgence in manganese ore prices. Following a feasibility study published in January, Element 25 is poised to boost production at Butcherbird to 1.1-million tonnes a year of manganese concentrate, requiring a capital investment of A$98.8-million.
President Cyril Ramaphosa Ramaphosa denies pre-election loadshedding respite is a ‘political ploy’

President Cyril Ramaphosa has entered the politically charged discussion on the reasons behind the recent dramatic reduction in loadshedding ahead of what is expected to be a highly competition election and amid allegations that the reprieve is being staged managed to improve the governing party’s prospects and will, thus, not be sustained. Writing in his weekly newsletter at a time which Eskom had refrained from implementing the unpopular rotational power cuts for a period of more than a month and a half, Ramaphosa denied that it was a “political ploy ahead of the elections”, while indicating that it was “too early to say that loadshedding has been brought to an end”.

The US Forest Service (USFS) has initiated the federal permitting process for the South32 Hermosa project, in Arizona. Under the umbrella of the National Environmental Policy Act, the USFS has launched the scoping process, inviting public input and commentary on South32’s project plans. This process aims to identify the scope of environmental analysis and explore potential impacts as part of the environmental impact statement.

Rio Tinto said on Monday an autonomous train had derailed at its Western Australian iron-ore operations overnight and that it was investigating the incident in which no one was hurt. The incident occurred when an autonomous train collided with a set of stationary wagons loaded with iron-ore impacting 22 wagons and three locomotives, according to statements from Rio Tinto and Australia's rail safety watchdog.
K+S confirms Q1 earnings beat and 2024 guidance as potash prices stabilise

German potash and salt miner K+S confirmed its core profit beat on Monday, as it benefited from a strong European specialty and industry business performances. The Hessian-based firm posted earnings before interests, taxes, depreciation and amortization of €200-million, 21% above analysts' expectations of €165-million, according to a poll by Vara research.
