Speakers highlight focus areas to tackle mine water challenges

South Africa has made considerable strides in addressing mine water challenges; however, it is imperative that these efforts are bolstered and improved upon, through aligning research with implementation, ensuring that the correct processes are in place and adapting the regulatory environment to be more conducive for the reuse and management of mine water. Empowering women in energy the intelligent thing to do, says DMRE official

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) had been running a five-year Energy Sector Women Empowerment Strategy since 2021, pointed out DMRE deputy director-general Hilda Mhlongo on Thursday. She was delivering the keynote address at the Women in Energy breakfast at the Enlit Africa 2024 conference, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. “The energy sector is crucial for economic development and sustainability,” she highlighted. But women remained underrepresented in the sector. That was why there was a need for empowerment strategies, to address this imbalance.

Gas has an important role to play in South Africa’s energy transition journey, Kearney partner Prashaen Reddy says amid calls for public comments on a draft Gas Master Plan, which was released for comment at the end of April. He notes that the Southern Africa region has had several recent gas finds across Mozambique, South Africa and Namibia, that allow for the development of indigenous resources to drive industrialisation, social development and economic growth.

Technology increasingly being used to improve control, accuracy in logistics value chains

The freight and transport logistics sectors are seeing ever greater use of technologies in warehouses, as well for stock-picking, consignment loading and delivery checks, among other applications, as the sectors work to automate a range of processes and improve the accuracy of those processes. New capabilities were being created using existing systems that were integrated with new machine learning (ML), image recognition and AI solutions to deliver new insights, capabilities and controls, logistics risk management company Professional Risk and Asset Management group operations director Gerhard van Zyl said.

Women having an impact in the energy sector, including Eskom, but a lot needs to be done

All four Eskom coal-fired power stations that are currently maintaining electricity availability factors (EAF) of more than 75% are headed by women. This was highlighted by Eskom group executive: human resources Elsie Pule on Thursday. She was participating in a panel discussion at the Women in Energy breakfast at the Enlit Africa 2024 conference, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Every time a woman took over a power station, she affirmed, the EAF shot up. Eskom, a decade ago, created a Women Advancement Programme. Over ten years, this has resulted in the proportion of women senior executives in the State-owned national electricity utility increasing from 29% to 42%. The same progamme has reduced the gender salary differential to 6%.

South Africa considers complaining to WTO against EU carbon border tax

South Africa is considering lodging a formal complaint at the World Trade Organization against the European Union's "protectionist" carbon border levy, Trade Minister Ebrahim Patel said on Wednesday. The EU's proposed carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), which will impose charges on imports of carbon-intensive goods like steel and cement into Europe, has faced criticism from some developing nations and sectors including China's steel industry.

Presidency insists 22.5 GW private IPP pipeline won’t be disrupted by Eskom move to reserve grid for public projects

The Presidency does not anticipate that Eskom’s move to reserve scarce grid capacity for independent power producers (IPPs) participating in public procurement bidding rounds will disrupt the more than 130 private IPP projects being advanced outside of those processes to supply private consumers. Speaking during a briefing convened to report back on the reforms implemented under Operation Vulindlela, including those undertaken to address South Africa’s loadshedding crisis, the Presidency’s project management unit head Rudi Dicks lauded the progress being made through the Energy One Stop Shop to support the private projects stimulated by the reform to allow grid-connected private projects of any size to proceed without a licence.

Fortescue excluded from world’s biggest hydropower plant development

A company owned by Australian mining billionaire Andrew Forrest will no longer develop the world’s biggest hydropower project in Democratic Republic of Congo, according to President Felix Tshisekedi’s office, which has replaced the firm with a Nigerian oil producer.
Natural Oilfield Services signed a preliminary deal with Congo on May 9 to build a smaller version of Fortescue's proposed Grand Inga project, which would have generated around 40 GW of hydropower.
