IATA launches analytics tool to help airlines cut fuel burn

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) on Tuesday launched its latest analytics tool, IATA FuellS. IATA is the representative body for the global airline industry, and the launch took place at its AGM in Dubai. IATA FuellS is, in the association’s words, “an advanced analytics solution to optimise airline fuel consumption, using aggregated and anonymised flight and fuel data”. Fuel is one of the biggest expenses an airline has, accounting for some 33% of any airline’s operational costs.
South Africa’s NRF welcomes Canadian boost to international climate change research

South Africa’s research funding, promotion, support and facilitation agency, the National Research Foundation (NRF), has welcomed the news that Canada is providing an extra $92-million in funding to the International Joint Initiative for Research in Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation (incredibly, this does not seem to have an official abbreviation). South Africa is one of the members, and funders, of this initiative. In addition to South Africa and Canada, the other members and funders are Brazil, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, the UK and the US. “The financial boost to the International Joint Initiative for Research in Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation comes at an opportune time,” affirmed NRF CEO Dr Fulufhelo Nelwamondo. “Research projects under the initiative are starting to take shape. These include those that are funded by the NRF, which has made significant investments in the initiative. The funding will propel these research projects to greater heights.”

The Financial Times, in partnership with Statista, has published its list of Africa’s 125 Fastest Growing Companies for the Year. In the top spot for manufacturing was Balancell Energy, a South African business that designs, engineers and manufactures smart lithium-ion batteries for multiple applications.
Liquidity position of many municipalities at risk

National Treasury has released the ‘Local Government Revenue and Expenditure Report’ for the third quarter of the 2023/24 financial year, which shows an underperformance of actual collections against billed revenue. Treasury warns that this holds a significant risk for the liquidity position of most municipalities as the planned expenditure is based on a higher performance level.

The Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) and Bureau for Economic Research (BER) Business Confidence Index (BCI) increased by five points to 35% in the second quarter of the year ahead of the national elections. Just more than a third of 2 500 survey respondents were satisfied with prevailing business conditions between May 9 and May 27; however, uncertainty around the election was top of mind for many respondents.

Sigfox SA appointed to support South Africa’s transition to smart water meters

National Treasury has selected Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity service Sigfox South Africa’s network to underpin South Africa’s new smart water meter ecosystem. The tender, commonly known as “RT29” awarded to various system integrators, will see existing meters adapted or replaced to become smart meters to improve revenue collection and service delivery.
CDE executive director Ann Bernstein Think tank outlines five priorities for new government and for shaping coalition talks

The Centre for Development and Enterprise (CDE) has released a list of five priorities for South Africa’s yet-to-be-formed new government and which the think tank also argues should help guide ongoing coalition negotiations. Global body UN Trade and Development (Unctad) has urged action to deal with the alarming surge of global debt and proposed reforms to international finance systems to safeguard “a prosperous future for people and planet”. A report published by Unctad on June 4 shows that global public debt hit a record $97-trillion in 2023, up by $5.6-trillion from 2022.

The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) has acknowledged and recognised the voluntary work of committee chairpersons during an engagement session and workshop to synchronise the approach to chairing committees at the SABS, in Pretoria, on June 5. The event included the welcoming of new members of chairing committees, which is critical in the development, maintenance and publication of South African National Standards (SANS), the SABS said.
