Nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) have criticised the Department of Energy’s (DoE’s) decision to select preferred bidders under the first bid window for independent coal baseload power plants. The Life After Coal Network says the expansion of coal-fired power generation through the Coal Baseload Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (CBIPPPP) is not compatible with South Africa’s commitments to keep global warming to 1.5 ºC above pre-industrial levels, or even to an increase of 2 ºC above that level.
