Department mulls desalination, but sees cost as hindrance

While desalination could be the answer to addressing water crises in South Africa, there are still a number of financial challenges surrounding it, says Department of Water and Sanitation infrastructure and operations CEO Leonardo Manus. Speaking to Engineering News Online at a media roundtable discussion on desalination, hosted by engineering consulting firm Gibb, on Thursday, Manus noted that, in South Africa, bulk water tariffs run as high as R13 a cubic metre, though the average tariff around the country is less than half this amount.
